The Zhejiang Provincial Development and Reform Commission has officially announced the list of newly recognized provincial engineering research centers for 2024. Among the approved projects, the "Brain-Computer Interface Intelligent Chip System Zhejiang Engineering Research Center" has been successfully certified. CenBRAIN Neurotech Center of Excellence, in collaboration with NEURALICORN Co., Ltd., Hangzhou General Stim Co., Ltd. aims to position Zhejiang at the forefront of brain-computer interface (BCI) research and development.
The establishment of this engineering research center brings together top talents from both domestic and international research and industry sectors. Among them, CenBRAIN NeurotechCenter of Excellence at Westlake University was founded in 2019 by internationally renowned expert, Chair Professor Mohamad Sawan. The center focuses on the application of bioelectronics in the field of neuroscience. It continues to make progress in areas such as brain-computer interfaces (BCI) and closed-loop neurostimulation technologies, aiming to improve the diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases and promote applications in motor and speech rehabilitation. In particular, the center has gained rich technical advantages in invasive BCI chips and neural decoding technologies, providing innovative solutions for next-generation smart implantable medical devices and personalized healthcare.
The establishment of the "Brain-Computer Interface Intelligent Chip System Zhejiang Engineering Research Center" has received strong support from the Future Industry Research Center of Westlake University. This marks another significant advancement for Zhejiang in the areas of core technology localization, deep integration of the industrial chain, and the commercialization of scientific research achievements. The center will further promote the wide application of brain-machine interface technology in fields such as intelligent healthcare, rehabilitation systems, and neurostimulation by exploring innovative mechanisms for the integration of medical engineering and technology transfer. It aims to provide strong technological support for high-quality, healthy living in Zhejiang Province and across the country. In this process, NEURALICORN, a spin-off company of the CenBRAIN Neurotech Center of Excellence, focuses on the development of low-power, high-throughput brain-computer interface chips and neural decoding algorithms, offering new rehabilitation pathways for patients with speech and motor disorders.
