Chair Professor Mohamad Sawan September Conference Series

September 2023, Dr. Mohamad Sawan, Chair Professor, Founder and Director of CenBRAIN Neurotech Center of Excellence of Westlake University, attended several national and international conferences and workshops, and gave keynotes speeches in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Handan and Jinan.

In these speeches, Professor Mohamad Sawan has presented to attendees the challenges and latest trends in the cutting-edge field of biomedical engineering. His insights have not only showcased the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and smart medical devices but have also inspired participants to contemplate how to face the future challenges in Brain-computer Interfaces related healthcare.

The 1st International Conference for Training Excellent-Engineers (ICTE 2023)

On September 27th, the 1st International Conference for Training Excellent-Engineers (ICTE 2023) was held in Beijing. The conference was supervised by Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and hosted by Chinese Union for Training Excellent Engineering, Huai Jinpeng, Secretary of the Party Group and Minister of the Ministry of Education, attended the conference and delivered a speech.

Zhejiang University, Alibaba Cloud Computing Co., Ltd and Baidu Online Network Technology (Beijing) Co., Ltd co-organized the Artificial Intelligence session in this conference. The theme of the conference is to deepen the integration of production and education, promote the reform of engineering education, accelerate the formation of an academic, industrial and policy community for the training of excellent engineers, and establish a world-level excellent engineer training system with Chinese characteristics.

Professor Mohamad Sawan delivered a keynote address titled "Should Universities Adapt Engineering Degrees to Meet Society’s Needs in AI?” In his speech, he explored new concepts, mechanisms, and methods for cultivating excellent engineers in the field of artificial intelligence. He emphasized the importance of developing teaching systems, top-level teaching materials, and competency standards for these engineers.

The 2023 RLS-Science Summit: Digital Health International Forum

On 26 September, the 2023 RLS-Science Summit: Digital Health International Forum was held in Jinan, co-organized by the Foreign Affairs Office of Shandong Provincial People's Government, Shandong Provincial Department of Science and Technology, and Shandong First Medical University. The forum is one of the activities of this summit, with the theme of "Digital Health, Green Future".

Chair Professor Mohamad Sawan attended the opening ceremony and delivered the first keynote lecture entitled "Closed-Loop Neuromodulation-based Medical Devices to Diagnosis, Treat and Predict Brain Disorders". In his address, he expressed his great honor in representing friendly provinces and states and speaking at the forum. He congratulated Jinan Medical Center and Shandong First Medical University on their remarkable achievements in the field of digital health.

The Annual ShanghaiTech Symposium on Information Science and Technology

On September 24th, at theAnnual ShanghaiTech Symposium on Information Science and Technology (ASSIST 2023) in Shanghai. Theme of this symposium is on “new-gen Artificial Intelligence: large-scale models and interdisciplinary applications”. Chair Professor Mohamad Sawan presented a lecture in the session on “AI for Biomedical Research”, titled "Closed-Loop Neuromodulation-based Medical Devices to Diagnosis, Treat and Predict Brain Disorders."  He shared his pioneering research in the field of intelligent microsystem technology for implantable and wearable medical devices.

The 3rd Recombinant Collagen Scientists Forum

At the 3rd Annual Collagen Scientist Forum held in Guangzhou on September 23rd, Professor Mohamad Sawan delivered a presentation titled "Recombinant Collagen to Increase the Performances of Implantable Medical Devices." He highlighted the potential of recombinant collagen in assisting the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, autism, epilepsy, as well as in restoring vision for the visually impaired and regulating respiration. As an esteemed international scientist in the field of smart biomedical devices, Professor Sawan emphasized the importance of biocompatibility in addressing transplantation issues. He discussed how three-dimensional cultivation methods and 3D printing technology can be used to manufacture protective coverings for implantable medical devices, ensuring their long-term presence in the human body while avoiding rejection reactions.

World Conference on Science LiteracyWCSL 2023

The World Conference on Science Literacy (WCSL 2023), co-hosted by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST)Chinese Academy of Sciences and Beijing Municipal People's Government, was held from 19 to 20 September in Beijing, China. The theme of this conference is “Enhancing Science Literacy and Working Together for Modernization”. The conference invited over 700 attendees including top scientists, senior policy makers, renowned scholars, representatives from international, regional, and national science and technology organizations and experienced practitioners in related fields at home and abroad. Professor Mohamad Sawan delivered a presentation titled "Emerging AI-based Brain-Computer Interfaces: Challenges and Trends". He introduced the implementation of wearable and implantable closed-loop neural modulators based on System-on-Chip (SoC) integrated platforms. These devices are utilized for the diagnosis, treatment, and prediction of health conditions, with a particular emphasis on the application of brain-computer interfaces in the diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

2023 International Experts Handan Tour - Health Care Technology Guidance Activity

Hosted by the Handan Municipal Science and Technology Bureau,the 2023 International Experts Handan Tour - Health Care Technology Guidance Activity was held in Handan Central Hospital. Chair Professor Mohamad Sawan, one of the representative international scientist in the field of biomedical engineering, was invited to take part in this activity and delivered a keynote on the "Emerging AI-based Medical Devices : Advantages and Limits".

In his speech, Professor Sawan underscored that the challenges within the field of neuroscience, but AI-based brain-computer interfaces consistently provide a breakthrough. He hopes to establish a bridge between the CenBRAIN Neurotech Center of Excellence and other outstanding medical research institutions, particularly in the areas of discipline development, scientific research, and talent cultivation.

The series of invited talks by Prof. Sawan showcases his earnest aspirations for the future development of medical technology and encourages more young scholars and experts to actively engage in this innovative and hopeful field. In this ever-evolving world of medical technology, he looks forward to creating more breakthroughs and innovations to enhance the quality of human life and health.
